Is it possible to make a branch conditional (a variant) without having to assign attributes to each page?

  What do you mean by a branch? Version branch or branch in the page tree? 

  And by conditional - do you mean all the pages in that branch automatically get that variant?

  The pages in the branch.  Not automatically necessarily.  Looks like the answer is no, per https://k15t.jira.com/browse/VSN-1709.
