Using template variables within PDF templates

Hello to everyone,

I've different global templates having different variables the user needs to setup before working on the final document.
With PDF Exporter I'd like to use those variables into the cover page (the title page) but I cannot understand how to access to them.

Someone suggested to use the Metadata plugin but it doesn't fit for me: the user has already defined the template's variables and I don't want to force him to put other metadata into the document.

So, what can I do? Is it possible?

  Hi Wilk,

  Thanks for reaching out.

  Have you already had a look at the following page: https://www.k15t.com/display/PDF/Using+PlaceholdersThe page displays all available placeholders which you can simply enter into your static pages for example or within your header or footers.

  Besides that you can also use Page Properties to create your own placeholders.

  Well, actually no, it didn't help.
  The point is that I've to use the pre-filled template variables into the PDF Exporter template instead of asking the user to refill new variables once again.
  Further more, I cannot use fixed placeholders because the data must depend on the user input.

  So, the question is: how can I use pre-filled template variables into a PDF Exporter template? Is it possible?

  Hi Wilk,

  There's no automation that let's you allow to define specific variables before creating an export.
  What you could try is to create a page template including the page properties macro and ask your users to fill out those page properties before every export.

  Again, filling out the page properties can not be enforced, but might be a workaround?

  Hi Nils,

  unfortunately I cannot ask to my users to provide those information twice.

  I'm looking for a workaround and it could be exporting word instead of pdf: I see that the Scroll Office plugin is maintained by you guys and of course it supports templates but, again, do you know if I'm going to face the same problem with it?

  Hi Wilk,

  Scroll Office is similar in this regard to PDF Exporter. There is no additional way to accomplish this in Scroll Office, unfortunately. All available placeholders for Scroll Office can be foundon this page: https://help.k15t.com/scroll-office/using-placeholders-75367911.html. 

  Could you please share a real world example of how you would like to use those variables?

  Hi Roman,

  well, they're just variables, you know: the purpose is defined in the Confluence documentation.

  In my case, we have a set of variables used into the final page: they are filled with custom macros (basically, a list of single/multi selection boxes).

  I cannot ask to the user to fill other metadata during the export phase.
